Four time Nigeria Professional Football League Champions, Kano Pillars played out a 2-2 draw away to neighbors, Katsina United in the first match of the 2017/2018 Nigeria Professional Football League season, decided on Saturday.
Coach Ibrahim A Musa who is without the services of his talisman, Rabiu Ali, new signings, Steven Eze and Ifeanyi Nweke due to national duty were captained by Chinedu Udoji in the absence of Gambo Muhammad.
The match described by many pundits in and around the country as a 'Brotherly affairs' lighten up as early as the sixth minutes when Junior Lokosa cut through the United defense to fired in a short that forced goalie, Danjuma Dami to a save.
Pillars continued to search for an early goal but the United's defense deal with all available efforts.
Katsina United real chance of the opening stages came in the 18th minutes of the game through a free kick that saw mercurial midfielder, Destiny Ashadi wasted it off target.
It was a wild jubilation at the 32 minutes of the game when the Nigerian giant opened the scoring through the ever presence Junior Lokosa from a good cross from the soon to be sent off Victor Denis down the right side of the United half.
Lokosa makes no mistake as he buried the death ball into the net.
However, Victor Denis was caught up when he was shown the matching order by the center referee, Sani Muhammad from Kaduna after a needless challenge on Eric Gwammy.
At 45th minutes, the game was 0-1 in favour of Pillars but four minutes were added due to the time wasted while treating Gwammy.
Katsina United players capitalised on the added time as they cancelled out Pillars's opener when Chinedu Ajanah scored with his head via Ashadi's free kick down the Pillars left side of the field in the 48th minutes of the game.
The first 45 minutes ended one goal apiece to both sides.
After the restart, Katsina United mounted so much pressure that lacked cutting edge on the ten men Pillars but the later were able to relax and soaked up pretty much of the pressure as they moved the ball around with ease as if it was not 11V10.
Alhassan Ibrahim scored the Sai Masu Gida's second goal of the evening with a thunderous shot at exactly 61 minutes of the game from outside the box that left goalkeeper, Danjuma Sani helpless.
The goal looked like a winning goal for the the Sai Masu Gida side's but all their hope dashed out as the referee pointed to a spot for a United's penalty.
Former El Kanemi Warriors man, Muhammad Hussain stepped in but saw his kick saved by David Obiazor. It was the first penalty kick awarded for the new season and equally, the first penalty save of the season.
After the regulation time, 5 minutes were added as injury time and incidentally, Katsina United were rewarded with another penalty kick in the four minutes of the added time when Pillars defender judged to have handled the ball in his 18-yard box.
This time, it was Destiny Ashadi and makes no mistake when he sent David Obiazor the wrong way for the leveller.
The result means that Kano Pillars are unbeaten in each of their opening Day fixture in the Nigeria Professional Football League since 2008/2009 season, winning 5 out of the previous 9 fixtures.
